How the SRT decides residence

The UK Statutory Residence Test runs in order. The tax year is 6 April to 5 April, not the calendar year.

Automatic overseas test (non-resident): fewer than 16 UK days if you were UK resident in one of the last three years (a "leaver"), or fewer than 46 days if you were not (an "arriver").
Automatic UK test (resident): 183 or more UK days.
Sufficient-ties test: between those, residence depends on your UK days and how many ties you have (family, accommodation, work, a 90-day tie, and — for leavers — a country tie). Fewer days need more ties; leavers become resident with fewer ties than arrivers.

This tool models the day bands and ties. It does not model the work-based automatic tests, split-year treatment, exceptional-circumstances days, or the precise definition of each tie — the real SRT is considerably more detailed.

How many days in the UK make me a tax resident?

183 or more days in the UK during the 6 April to 5 April tax year makes you automatically UK resident, regardless of ties. Below 183, the sufficient-ties test can still make you resident on far fewer days if you keep strong UK connections.

What counts as a UK day under the SRT?

Generally a day you were in the UK at midnight, with anti-avoidance rules for frequent brief visits and a transit exception. This midnight standard differs from US states, where any part of a day can count.

What are the ties in the sufficient-ties test?

Family in the UK, available accommodation, 40 or more days of UK work, 90 or more UK days in either of the previous two tax years, and, for leavers, more days in the UK than in any other single country. The more ties you keep, the fewer days make you resident.
